SWTOR Sith Assasin PVP Tips

I’m having too much fun playing PvP as a Sith assassin.  (In fact, PvP is the only reason why I renewed my subscription for another month.)  After playing my fair share of warzones (and waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much Huttball), I’d like to share what I’ve learned with all ten of my regular readers.  Perhaps they will spread the word to others looking to jump into PvP and get all stealthy assassiny:

  • You Are A Glass Cannon.  Yes, your DPS is awesome.  Scounderels want to be you.  Children look up to you.  Women want to date you.  But, your armor sucks. Bad.  You can click your heels together as many times as you want, but if you go toe to toe with someone on your same level, you will be respawning in no time flat.
  • Stick With a Group.  Since you are a glass cannon, it would be wise to stick close to another person (preferably a tank), so that you can help them.  In Huttball, you should be sticking close to the ball handler anyway so that you can help clear a path for them.
  • Stick to the Outside.  Stealth is going to be your greatest advantage.  In the chaos of the warzone, if you can’t stick close to someone, stealth and pick off someone.  This technique is particularly useful in the Voidstar where healers and smugglers/imperial agents like to setup cover away from the doors and blast people.
  • Players Forget About You.  Most players are too focused on their next kill to remember that there is a shadow in their midst.  One of my favorite things to do in the Novare Coast is to stealth at an enemy controlled turret if it becomes obvious that we are going to fail to take over control.  Often, the opposing team will leave thinking they have defeated everyone.  Once they are gone, I break stealth and take control of the turret.  This same technique is useful in the Voidstar as well.  Everyone is busy fighting each other, they don’t notice the assassin that just popped up at the door to plant a bomb.
  • Die Trying.  If you find yourself in a jam and it becomes, obvious you are going to die, go out in a blaze of glory.  Even if your opponent has significantly more health than you, use your abilities on them.  Slow them.  Stun them. Anything.  Even if you are going to die, any small thing you do may help your teammate take them down.
  • Get Your Demolisher Medal.  The demolisher medal is earned by striking someone for 2.5k damage in a single hit.  This may be difficult to do against other level 50′s, but should be a cinch against others.  Use an adrenal and/or a relic, sneak up behind someone and let them have it.  You should be able to get this medal each time you play a warzone.

You Can Now Send Items and Credits Cross Faction

One of the least publicized, but most useful new features in update 1.2 is the ability to mail items and credits to your alts on the opposite faction.

So, if you have a Republic character sitting on a serious stack of credits, you can send a good portion of them (along with any items) to your Imperial character.  Hooray!  Now I may actually may have a use for all of those Dark relics that I’ve been accumulating.

3 Tips for Leveling Faster

Can’t wait to get to 50?  Would you rather gulp down SWTOR rather than sip and savor the journey?  Here are 3 tips proven to help you level your SWTOR character faster:

Quest with a Friend.  Yes, companions are great but questing with another live player is awesome.  Having another person with you enables you to take out enemies much faster and as a result, complete quests at a rapid rate.  On my server, there were players who hit Level 50 within a week of the SWTOR launch (the early access launch).  How did they do it?  A lot of Red Bull and group questing.

Complete All Daily Missions.  Do all of your daily missions….ummm….daily.  Daily missions such as Heroric Quests and Space Missions give you great XP.  The XP from these missions is greater than the amount given from “regular” questing.  But most notably, they are repeatable which allows you to accumulate a higher rate of XP more often.

PvP.  Much has been said about the current state of PvP in SWTOR.  Regardless of your opinion on the matter, PvP gives you a lot of XP.  You don’t even have to be a great PvP player to reap the benefits of the copious amount XP.  Participants get a great deal just by engaging in a warzone.  If you happen to get MVP status on your PvP match, then your XP total will go through the roof.

Compared to PvE questing, the amount of XP you earn in PvP is far greater.  I’m not a big PvP fan, but the few times that I’ve tried it, I got a good deal of XP in a relatively short amount of time.  If you are stuck in a PvE rut, PvP is a good way of breaking up the monotony and making some singnificant progress on your way to Level 50.

Four Tips for Running a Successful SWTOR Crafting Business

Are you having selling things on the SWTOR Galactic Trade Network?  Instead of selling a few items from time to time, hoping that they are priced right, and hoping that someone will buy them, why not establish an actual crafting business, where customers come to you?  It can be done, but it takes a little hard work, some time, and some great customer service skills.  Here are four tips for building a great SWTOR crafting business:

1.  Build A Customer List.  Keep a record of who purchased your item and exactly what they purchased.  This is a paying customer:  the lifeblood of your business!  Send them a quick follow up email thanking them for your purchase and letting them know that if they need anything else that you would be happy to help them out.  As a consumer yourself, you should know that you would frequent a business that showed outstanding customer service.  The same applies in a virtual world as well.

This email list will become invaluable as time goes on.  It is going to take some time to track all of your orders, but once you have an established customer list, it will become the most essential part of your business. Building any kind of a business takes some work, but the rewards will be lucrative.

Since you will be working with this list quite often, pick a tool that makes sense for you to use in order to build and maintain your list.  Remember this will be something that you will be working with everyday and if you are successful can grow quite large.  You may want to stick with good old fashioned pen and paper at first and then build up to a spreadsheet, or taking notes in a cloud application like Evernote.

2.  Communicate With Your Previous Customers.  Since you have a record of who purchased what from your crafting inventory, send the appropriate customers an email when you place items for sale on the GTN.  For example, if you just crafted a bunch of med packs and listed them for sale, send all of your prior med pack customers an email letting them know that X Number of Med Packs are for sale on the GTN @ 100 credits each.”  Remember: don’t SPAM them.  Just politely let them know that they are available by sending them one email.

The purpose in doing this is to keep the line of communication open.  Your customers will be happy that you are thinking of them by letting them know before anyone else that your goods are available for sale.  You could even mention something in the email about “letting them know first.”  Putting your established customers first builds a relationship with them.  Since they know that they are a priority they may begin to seek you out when they need something crafted for them.

3.  Build Relationships.  How great would it be to have customers coming to you with crafting requests?  Instead of throwing some of your stuff up on the GTN, and hoping someone buys it, you will get regular requests for orders.  You may not even have time to list your stuff on the GTN.  You will be too busy with your regular customers!

Buy communicating with your customers, tracking your sales, and offering your buyers exactly what they want at a fair price, they will be coming back to you time and time again.  Once word gets out that not only do you craft great stuff, but that you have great customer service and treat your customers fairly, word will travel around the galaxy (server) that people need to look no further than your humble little crafting shop.

4.  Keep Your Customers Happy.  Don’t let success go to your head.  Offer your customers a discount once in a while.  Keep your regular customers happy by discounting items on occasion.  Or send them some freebies now and then.  In the SWTOR universe, people have a lot of choice when it comes to vendors and you want to keep your established customers happy.  If they aren’t feeling the love, they will be quick to move on to the next person that can give them a better deal.

Remember, good customer service and keeping your customers happy work just as well in a virtual world as they do in real life.  Try out a few of these tips and see if your business takes off!

How To Copy SWTOR to Another Computer

Are you planning on playing SWTOR on multiple PCs?  You don’t need to download the Huuuuuuuuuuuuuge game client each time!  Simply copy the installation files from one computer to another.  Here’s how:

1.  Obtain access to a PC that has SWTOR fully installed and patched.  It is highly advised that you do this legally.

2.  Obtain an external hard drive with at least 30 gigabytes of free space.  It is also highly advised that you do this legally.

3.  Navigate to C:/Program Files (x86)/Electronic Arts/Bioware/) and copy the folder “Star Wars – The Old Republic” folder to the external hard drive that you obtained in step 2.

4.  Download the SWTOR installer from http://www.swtor.com/download  to the second PC that you would like to play SWTOR on and install the game.

5.  Copy the “Star Wars – The Old Republic” folder from the external hard drive into the same installation directory (C:/Program Files (x86)/Electronic Arts/Bioware) on the second computer.  This will overwrite the existing Star Wars – The Old Republic folder.

6.  Spin around three times and then yell, “Yahtzee!”  Hey, it might help.

7.  Launch SWTOR.  The updater will scan your system.  It should see that all of the files are up to date and allow you to start playing the game.

8.  If the launcher begins to download additional files or gives you an error, exit the game and launch SWTOR again.  This time, click the options icon on the game client.  Select the Repair option.  Once the repair is finished, you should be able to start playing SWTOR.

That’s all there is to it.  No need to spend a day (or more) downloading the installation files on another PC.

10 SWTOR Tips for WoW Players

If you’re a WoW player that is about to enter the world of SWTOR, SWTORHub has written a helpful article just for you!  Although I’ve never played WoW (yes, I’m the one person), I can see how this article would be helpful as it relays some of the terminology in WoW to the equivalent in SWTOR.  Check it out!

Get Your PC Ready for SWTOR

Finally, SWTOR is almost upon us!  Before the best game of the year (and possibly the decade) arrives, make sure your PC is ready by doing all that you can to get it ready before you install it and begin your adventure in a galaxy far, far away.

Update Your Drivers.  Driver updates are one of the last things people think about then performing maintenance on their computer, and for good reason.  If you’re reading this post, then it means that your video drivers are working, right?  Why should you change them then?

Video card manufacturers release driver updates all of the time.  The new and improved drivers are typically more stable than the previous one, fix bugs associated with particular applications (such as video games), and generally make video perform better overall.  So, before you log in and start your SWTOR marathon, grab the latest driver for your video card.

Since you’re in the driver updating mood (notice how I didn’t say “driver’s seat.”  That would be lame and BloggingTOR will not advocate lameness), check to see if there is an updated driver available for your sound card as well.  Although new sound card drivers aren’t released as often, an update may be available.

Plus, you wouldn’t want to be lame by running an outdated driver, right?  All the cool kids keep their drivers up to date.  All of the time.  Even the one for their monitor.  Do it now or you won’t get into the college of your choice.

Clean Up Your Space.  At last check, the full install of SWTOR was over 27 gigabytes in size.  Before you allocate close to 30 gigs of disk space to this application, uninstall any old programs you no loner use and delete any temporary files that exist on your system.  You will free up space on your system and you may find that it runs better too.

When an application is installed, sometimes it installs a service or small program that runs in the background.  If this application is uninstalled, then this service is not using any memory and you will have more memory available for running SWTOR.

The concept is similar to that of a man entering his middle age years.  In order to remember something new, he has to forget something that he once knew.  Take it from me personally….I can recall the seven layers of the OSI model, but can’t remember how to spell the word restaraunt, restauraunt,  restaurant.

Defrag.  Along with doing a general disk cleanup, consider defragmenting your hard drive.  The Windows NTFS file system is supposed to be self defragmenting, just like the government is supposed to advance the best interests of its citizens, but as with both cases, this isn’t always true.

Defragmenting will help “get your house” in order as far as the Windows file system is concerned.  Before laying down a fresh application, run the defrag and you may bolster system performance.

Windows Vista/7 machines may already be configured to defragment automatically at a certain time of day each week.  However, If you’re still living in the beginning of the millenium and running Windows XP, why don’t you defragment your hard drive while watching your favorite Arrested Development episode on your DVR, Blue Ray, DVD player tonight?

Consider an Upgrade.  As a last resort, you may want to upgrade your existing system in order to make it perform better.  For those of us who may have to get approval of a hardware purchase from the wife budget committee, this may not be a viable option.  Plus, you may want to see how your current hardware performs in SWTOR before you spend money on new hardware.  It may turn out to run just fine.

If you do decide that you need to purchase new hardware in order to optimize your SWTOR experience, here are a few tips to consider if you decide to upgrade your system:

Memory.  More memory may help your system load items faster, but typically this is not where you will get the most bang for the buck unless your PC is severly starved for memory resources.  I would look at upgrading other components first.

Video Card.  A faster video card with its own memory and GPU will definately give you a better playing experience in SWTOR.  If you are looking to upgrade your video card, make sure that your power supply is equipped to handle it though.

If you are looking to get the A1 Xtreme Talon video card* and it requires a 500w power supply when you only have a 350w power supply, think twice about getting this card.  Although it may run, your PC may get too hot causing it to crash and even damage other components.  Heat and magnetism are still the two worst things for any computer.  Don’t add more heat to your system unless you know your system can accomodate it.

*The A1 Xtreme Talon Video card is an exclusive video card sold only through BloggingTOR and is guaranteed to give you the smoothest, most fluid graphics experience in any video game….ever.  It also comes with the ownership rights to a bridge in San Francisco.

Disk.  Upgrading to a solid state drive will definately decrease your load times in SWTOR, but they are still pretty pricy, especially when you compare the cost on a per gigabyte basis with a SATA drive.  If you are using a laptop for your SWTOR gaming, upgrading to an SSD is the only upgrade option you have aside from increasing your memory.

If your PC has a free SATA port open, you can consider buying a second drive and then moving your page file onto this drive.  Having the Windows page file on its own drive that is connected to its own SATA port on the motherboard will give your system a little extra ooomph.

We’ve got a little less than two weeks to go until SWTOR is released.  Make sure that your PC is primed and ready.

10 Things You Should Know Before Playing SWTOR

Rob Henriquez at TORWars has written an excellent article titled “10 Things You Should Know Before Playing The Old Republic.”  In the article, Rob gives a lot of great tips that will give you an advantage when you start playing the game and may even save you a few hours of frustration.  Here are a few of my favorite tips from his article:

“There are some useful options in your preferences that aren’t checked by default and checking them will make your life easier. I’ll just hit on a couple of them here. The first is Area Looting (aka AoE Looting). When you check this the loot from several defeated mobs in your immediate area is combined at the mob you are looting.”

“Sometimes the rewards are pretty nice and don’t require too much effort on your part. For instance, when you get to the Fleet station, go visit all the Crew Skills trainers. You’ll get a nice XP bonus and a new Codex entry just for talking to each one. In addition to learning about the Crew Skills and how they integrate with each other, by visiting all of the trainers you’ll probably get enough XP to gain most, if not all, of a level.”

Good job on the article Rob!

Preparing for SWTOR: Read the KOTOR Storyline

With just over two months to go until the official launch date, I decided to revisit the KOTOR storyline in order to get familiar with the characters and storyline again.  Of course, I remember Bastilla, Revan, and Malak, but what about the minor characters such as Davik Kang or Matrik?  In order to properly prepare for SWTOR, I wanted to get reacquainted with the original SWTOR universe and characters in case I encounter them in SWTOR.

Fortunately, Google has once again proven to be my best friend (next to microwave pizza, of course.  C’mon…..It’s an entire pizza ready in five minutes!  If they could make pizza in five minutes back in the 1940′s, World War II never would have occurred.)  Wikia has all of the KOTOR information you could ever want complete with storyline and the full compliment of characters.

Of course, it is no substitute for playing the game itself.  If you haven’t played through the entire game at least once (once on each side is better), please go to Steam and buy a copy.  It will be time well spent.  I would play through the game once again, but I am really trying to finish off the latest Rise of Isengard expansion in Lord of the Rings Online.  Maybe I’ll give KOTOR a whirl when November comes around.
