Puzzles Confirmed in the Eternity Vault

Massively (via Darth Hater) points to an interview with lead game designer Gabe Amatangelo where he mentions that puzzles are definitely a part of the Eternity Vault in addition to five bosses or “encounters:”

“The Eternity Vault has five. It has five encounters. ‘Bosses’ is such a loose term. One of them, you have to hack this puzzle. You’ve got to split up the group, and you’ve got to fight back a bunch of different waves while people are trying to solve a puzzle in tandem.”

We first speculated that the Eternity Vault trailer that was shown at GamesCom contained a brief one second shot of a character trying to complete a puzzle similar to the ones that are found in the KOTOR series.  We now have confirmation.

Puzzle in the Eternity Vault

As you may have heard by now, a new Eternity Vault trailer was released at GamesCom today.  As you can see here, it appears that there is some sort of puzzle that needs to be solved at some point in the Vault.

Both Kotor games featured puzzles that required you to solve them before you could progress on your quest.  Puzzles also make an appearance in other BioWare games such as Dragon Age and Mass Effect.  From what I can recall, the puzzles only had one solution and were not randomized.  They could easily be solved after a quick Google search.

I’m hoping that SWTOR takes this to the next level.  Have the puzzle change each time.  Make each puzzle somewhat unique, and not cookie cutters of each other.  If it takes place in a Flashpoint, make it so your team has to protect one member of the group while they figure it out.  What about any sort of food or trait on a piece of gear that gives you a hint to the solution, or allows you to solve the puzzle faster?

I’m excited to see that BioWare appears to be implementing some sort of puzzle mechanic into SWTOR.  I hope that they utilize puzzles to their full potential, keeping the player base interested and challenged.  One more thing to hurry up and wait for…..
