Early Solo Play in SWTOR

SWTOR Life has a review on what it was like playing through SWTOR purely as a solo endeavor.  The author, MrWarlock did his due diligence as he played every class except the Imperial Agent during this latest beta weekend.

Both readers of this blog know that I plan on playing solo a lot in SWTOR and that I think that making a solo friendly MMO is a great idea.  That is why I was happy to read MrWarlock’s final conclusion about solo play:

“For those of you wishing to solo in TOR, you will have more fun in this game than any other MMO you have played to-date. The story heightens even the most mundane tasks. You may find reasons to group for some quests, but if you’re dead set on going it alone, the game is set up in such a way that no matter what your play-style is, you can do it your way.”

December 15th (I am getting in a full five days early, right?  C’mon!  I have a Fan Site!) can’t get here quick enough!

Play Pazaak Online

Need something to do while you are waiting in the server queue?  Bored out of your mind at work?  Play pazaak!  This site allows you to play pazaak online or on any Windows PC.  Cool!

The Complete Companion List

SWTOR Spy has a complete companion list for each class.  The list includes the companion’s name as well as their role (tank, healer, etc.)  Check it out here!

SWTOR Live Stream Today

IGN will be streaming four hours of SWTOR gameplay today at their official site.  If you haven’t played the beta yet, want to pick up a few tips, or are bored out of your mind at work, head on over and check it out.  Everything starts at 4 PM Pacific Time today.

Legacy System Officially Announced

The Legacy System has officially been announced on the official forums.  It seems as if Bioware is encouraging you to roll different characters with all of them being able to earn you rewards as your legacy increases.  Interesting.  I can’t wait to see how this system develops.

The NDA Has Been Lifted

The NDA for beta has officially been lifted!  Fee free to talk amongst yourselves.  Not to mention, post pics, videos, whatever you would like.

Another SWTOR Signature Generator

Silent Corsairs has another SWTOR signature generator for you to play around with.  This version allows you to use your own picture for your avatar or background image.  Check it out here.

Is the Third Time the Charm?

With the latest “Everyone Is Invited” beta test, this will be the third time that I will have the opportunity to participate in a SWTOR beta test.  However, I think that I am going to pass on this one.

Why?  Several reasons.  I don’t want to uncover any more spoilers.  I don’t want to level up to the high teens/mid twenties and then stop.  I don’t want to fill out any more feed back forms.  I am ready for prime time.  I want to create my character and play for real.

Don’t take this the wrong way.  I am very grateful that I was selected for the first weekend beta test as well as the subsequent one.  I know that if I had not, I would have been frantic, relying only on what information I could gather from the internet and any discussions I had with people who were active beta participants.

Beta access has allowed me to become familiar with the gameplay mechanics and the content path.  This will give me an early advantage, as I won’t need to spend the first few hours figuring things out and learning about all of the intricacies of the game.  When launch comes (hopefully five days early), I can hit the ground running and start my adventure.

I’m wondering if anyone else feels this way?  Are you going to not participate in this third beta test?  What are your reasons?

Why Everyone Needs a Security Authentication Key

When the recently announced security authentication keys become available for SWTOR, everyone needs to get one.  Without exception.  Seriously.

Why?  Because just like a certain brand of mint gum, two is better than one (link included for anyone under 30).  By requiring two things to authenticate you before you start playing, you will greatly reduce the likelihood that your account will get hacked.  In this case, the authentication will require that you possess something (the key) which will generate a unique password (something you know).

Typically, these keys generate a new password each day.  So not only do you need to posses the key in order to generate the password, the password will always change.  If someone does compromise your account whether it is in game or through the forums, by the time they get to your password, it will be obsolete.

It looks like the security keys for WoW retail for $25.00.  People may balk at paying more money for something SWTOR related, but this will be money well spent.  How much would you pay to ensure that no one else could ever log into your SWTOR account?

WoW Subscriptions Drop Again

Shares of Blizzard Activision are down today after the company released their 3rd quarter results.  Although the company beat analyst estimates and even raised their earnings forecast for the year, investors are concerned about the number of WoW subscriptions dropping to 10.3 million compared to 11.1 million three months earlier.

Is this because of SWTOR’s launch in December?  Their latest expansion having to do with pandas?  People wanting to jump ship after playing the same game for so long?  Probably a combination of both.

I am going out on a limb here saying that WoW subscriptions will drop again during this fiscal quarter before leveling out at around 9 million for 2012.
