5 Tips for SWTOR Beta Weekend

Did you get an invite for the first SWTOR Beta Weekend?  Congratulations!  Here are five tips to ponder for anyone participating in this first of many SWTOR beta weekends:

  • Didn’t get an invite?  Be sure to check your SPAM folder.  Both Yahoo! and Gmail users reported that the invite was flagged as spam and didn’t make it into their inbox.
  • Start the download as soon as possible.  The launcher itself is a small application, but after you log in it needs to download all of the game content which totals over 40 gigabytes of data.  To make sure that you get everything in a timely manner, leave your PC on overnight and download a good chunk of the content while you sleep.
  • Make a plan.  Your time for playing SWTOR may be very limited this weekend, depending what you’ve got going on in real life.  Decide now what you want to concentrate on and make sure that you accomplish your goals.  For example, I have picked two classes that I want to try out: one light side and one dark side.  If they start off as new characters, I want to take each of them to level 10.  If I can accomplish something beyond that, I will consider it a bonus.  But, as long as I accomplish this original goal, I will have considered my time in beta a success.
  • Don’t stress out.  Playing an MMO can easily stress someone out.  Everywhere you look, there is a constant reminder of something that hasn’t been done yet.  There is always one more level to reach, more resources to gather, more quests to finish.  Relax.  You will enjoy your MMO journey much more if you sip and savor it, not try to gulp it down all at once.
  • Take a break.  You’ve waited two years for this moment.  You’re finally playing SWTOR but you only have a limited amount of time to do so.  Instead of pulling a mutli-hour gaming marathon where the only thing you do outside of clicking buttons is breathing, take small breaks now and then.  Go outside.  Go for a walk around the block.  Call someone.  Get something to eat.  Hydrate.  Small breaks are important for your sanity and your body.

Labor Day weekend is sure to be a busy one for many of us.  For those who didn’t get an invite, don’t despair.  Your time will come.  For those who did, see you in game!  It is sure to be a great time!
